Show Secretary Tammy Smith wrote the following report on this year’s Show…

Well this is my second year as Secretary and whilst it should be getting easier the main hurdle before Show Day was the weather, which I could not influence! Whilst we had lovely dry weather on Thursday and Friday, Saturday was a wash out with many, many queries about whether we were still going ahead.  We are tough in Yorkshire and, of course, the answer was always a resounding “YES”!

This was the right decision as we had no rain at all on show day. We had a few muddy areas but overall the show field was fine, we even had visitors in sandals! Huge thank you to our judges who travelled to us from far and wide, from Shetland, Worcestershire and Suffolk as well as many other counties.

This is the 170th year of our show, having started in 1849, which is pretty impressive. We remain indebted and grateful to the Ingilby family for great support over the years.

Entries increased on last year and special mention to our sheep steward Neil Spedding as we had a fantastic number of sheep entries. New for this year, we introduced Young Farmer classes which were well received. Sadly we had to cancel our pig classes but are looking forward to welcoming them back next year.

Stuart Barnes was multi-tasking this year (thank you Stuart!) as he put on 3 Sheep Show performances and was the main attraction in the rings with 2 performances with his dogs and ducks.  A lovely demonstration, educational and fun, which we really enjoyed.

The terrier racing was as much fun as ever and we loved watching the heavy horses, the hound and beagle parades and the vintage cars and tractors.

Thank you to all of the trade stands and craft stalls, they really help us to promote local businesses. Our charity of the year is Yorkshire Air Ambulance and we welcomed their stand to help promote awareness about the life-saving work of the charity and what it takes to raise £12,000 each day. My favourites were the giant tortoises owned by Adrian Graham , they were amazing to see, thank you for coming to our show.

Thank you to all of our judges, members, life members, advertisers, caterers and sponsors and a huge thank you to the many, many stewards, volunteers and helpers. Special thanks go to our Chairman, Mr Andrew Walmsley, our Trade Stand Secretary, Michael Gulwell, the volunteer Doctors and Vets and to Sir Thomas and Lady Emma Ingilby.

My final thanks is to The Yorkshire Post who featured us on the front page on the Saturday before our show and the Monday after. Some lovely pictures which I hope you got chance to see.

Our next event is the Ripley Show Dinner which takes place on Friday 7th February 2020 at The Millstones, Harrogate.

Our 2020 Show takes place on Sunday 9th August – get the date in your diary!
